ChristinesCreations.net Tips for Caring for Your Jewelry
As the holidays approach, many of you will be receiving jewelry as gifts, or possibly purchasing bridal jewelry for your big day in the Spring. Now is the perfect time to remind ourselves of some helpful hints on the handling of our jewelry. Whether its pearls, gemstones, or even diamonds, here are some basic rules:
- When cleaning, doing yard work, etc…remove all jewelry. I know it’s easy to forget, but manual labor and perspiration can cause a lot of wear and tear on our favorite pieces.
- Never wear your jewelry in the pool. Chlorine /bleach can eat away at the finish and very core of many pieces. Whether it’s handmade, sterling, or gold, bleach should not touch your jewelry.
- When dressing or getting ready to go out, be sure to put your jewelry on last, especially after makeup and hair products. Hairspray can cause an irreversible film on gemstones and dull the finish of most jewelry.
- Clean your jewelry with a polishing cloth. Whether it’s gold, sterling, or silver plated, these cloths are the best way to shine up your jewelry nicely. For diamonds, use mild hand soap and warm water…NEVER use bleach or toothpaste!
- Storing your jewelry in a lined jewelry box (not cotton filled) is key. Many of us are guilty of throwing our most worn pieces on the dresser at the end of the day. This may be convenient, but not the best way to go.
Hopefully some of you find these helpful in caring for your favorite jewelry/accessories. Maybe some of you will even be seeing some soon –to-be favorites this holiday season.
Have a great Holiday Season!
